OK, good blog post on LJ's plight.

As a followup to my last post, this blog entry sums up my own thoughts on the matter very well.

I didn't want to really get into it on blog (though I did say many things in comments to various people), since I realize it's feeding a rumour mill. But since someone else has now stated it, I feel comfortable saying it too. Given the kinds of cuts SUP made, it's likely that LJ is going to start down the path of fading out.. unless they manage to get sold.

It's what I've seen in the business world, and particularly in the tech business world, for a long time. Yes, none of this is guaranteed; but it's likely.

I think that entry is exactly correct.

Thanks for the link and support

Muchly appreciated.

I think it depends on the nature of the cuts. Supposedly 12 out of 60 people on staff have been cut. This is significant but at the same time its probably more than enough to keep things going along relatively smoothly. There may be delays in rolling out new features *but* at the same time how many new features does LJ actually need? It pretty much does what it's supposed to do and additional features probably don't add all that much to the bottom line. The question is if the site can support itself primarily on subscription or if its going to need to move to an across the board advertising model like everyone else. Personally I don't see it folding up shop anytime soon. Eventually it will - all of these sites will eventually. I just don't see it happening in the next few months or even the next couple of years. I do think there will be changes to increase the revenue stream though.

Thing is, I am thinking a couple of years down the line. I have a lot of network built up on here, and it'll take time for me to build it back up. It's easier on me to start now and co-exist between blogs for a couple of years than trying to start all over from scratch later on.

Thanks for the link!

I can't get over what a tiny world you and I live in.

One of the people who followed up on the post you link to is a friend's ex.
