Ok, this is great.

So, Syria's gotten clever, in a sort of obvious way. Why do I say that?

Well, here, I'll quote the relevent bit:

Syria's draft text seeks a central role for the Council in countering the spread of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons in the region.

It calls on all the countries in the Middle East to ratify a series of arms control treaties, including the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention.

Israel has signed the convention but never ratified it, while Syria has neither signed nor ratified it.

Syria's UN Ambassador, Mikhail Wehbe, said Syria would ratify it if all other governments in the region did so.

"It is in the interest of the US forces in Iraq that the Middle East be free of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons of mass destruction," Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq al-Sharaa said.

He added that this would make it difficult for terrorists to get their hands on such weapons.

So, what they're doing is using our own words and going by our own "rules" (I use rules in context of our original reasons for attacking Iraq, not our actual actions) to draft this proposal. Now, here's the really clever part: not only is it a great PR stunt to show their intentions to the world, it's an impossible thing to ask as Israel is never going to allow it... and thus neither will we. We'll have to be stuck vetoing the proposal that would give us the authority to continue our rampa.. er, that is built of our own words.

Or in the outside chance the proposal passes, the USA rampages at our new best friends, the Syrians, behest, taking out all of their enemies for them! Win-win proposition, that's just beautiful.

I wonder if our Hawks realize just how pegged they've been. I'm sure we'll find ourselves arguing in short order about how everyone knows the Syrians were just trying to give superficial efforts to keep the US from attacking them, yadda; but I stand in admiration. Good show!
