relationship poll wrapup

17 females answered. Of them, 7 would be more offended by their partner having an affair, 10 would be more offended by their partner hiring a prostitute. Further, 5 expect that their partner would would be more offended by them having an affair, 11 expect that their partner would be more offended by them hiring a prostitute, and 1 expects that her partner wouldn't be offended.

19 males answered. Of them, 8 would be more offended by their partner having an affair, 5 would be more offended by their partner hiring a prostitute, and 6 would not be offended. Further, 8 expect that their partner would be more offended by them having an affair, 8 expect that their partner would be more offended by them hiring a prostitute, and 3 expect that their partner would not be offended.

2 non-gender identified people answered. Of them, 1 would be more offended by their partner hiring a prostitute, and one would not be offended. Both expect that their partner would be more offended by them hiring a prostitute.

So, overall, it's pretty close between the two cases. The sample size I have is too small for any real conclusions, but if these results are any indication, there appears to be a tendency for men to be more offended by their partner having an affair, where the women are more offended by a prostitute (of those who are offended). Oddly, the stronger expectation from women is that their partners would be more offended by them hiring a prostitute, whereas men are evenly divided on if their partners would be more offended by either choice.

I didn't answer the poll, but I can say this:

Isn't hiring a prostitute a subset of having an affair?

Or is there a different connotation to "having an affair" than just cheating on your significant other? I am assuming that the use of the term "affair" means that the arrangement is unknown to the significant other here. Is that an incorrect assumption?

What if one would be equally offended by either an affair or the hiring of a prostitute?

This is why I don't answer quizzes very often... I'm always picking apart the questions ;)

Because of your first question, I explicitly put the poll answer as, "having an affair (not paid for)".

I also clarified in comments that "affair" is different for every relationship, but I was looking for the cases where someone could be offended by the behaviours. Like, the questions weren't an exploration of what people considered appropriate behavior for their relationship, they were merely looking for what of the two options would be more offensive.

In light of that, I didn't want to give the option of, "both". That is a bit of a cop out, and doesn't really work with the point of the poll.

You might want to go back in my entries and look up the discussion that did ensue in the comments on the poll, I found them interesting.

Ah, okay. I may have to do that.
I didn't go through the full poll when you originally posted it, so I missed that. That does make more sense, though :)

Oh, I should point out my answer at this point, which I'd withheld to keep from tainting the poll at the time:

I told my coworker when he sprung the question on me that I would be more offended by an affair, because it poses more of a risk to my relationship. A prostitute is a no-strings attached (emotionally speaking) affair, whereas an outside affair might have emotional involvement by one or both of the parties.

And for the record, since it came up: I am very monogamous. I'm just built that way, it's not a moral superiority thing, it's just that I don't like trying to keep up with more than one relationship in my life. However, I also realize that others are not built the same way I am, and have different ways of having their relationships, and I am entirely sympathetic towards them living their lives the way they need to.
