RIP Howard Gobioff

I just received news that Howard died of Lymphoma. I confirmed with Wandi, so this isn't just rumour. Apparently he'd been in the hospital for the last month and didn't tell anyone about it.

I had been meaning to visit him up in NYC since he's been back from Japan. He was a fantastically good friend back in the goth club days here in Pittsburgh from '97-'99, and then he was a better friend when we both moved out to the Bay Area around the same time. I lost close touch with him when he moved to Japan, because of the time zone differences, and well... just haven't managed to get back in touch with him since.

I have missed him, and will miss him more now.

oh dear. I am sorry to hear that he was ill.

If you find out any service details, please email them to me? I am sure there are some people over here that would like to know, I will pass the information along.

He didn't tell anyone, even his family.


He will be buried in Hollywood, Florida this Friday (3/14/2008) at

Beth David Memorial Gardens
3201 NW 72nd Ave
Hollywood, FL 33024

The service will be at 2pm in the chapel.

For those of you unable to attend I will be putting together something
in NY sometime in the near future and will keep you informed.

Please do not send flowers. If you'd like to do something, please
donate to one of the charities Howard chose to leave money to:

Yow.

I used to work with Howard at PDL at CMU. He was my first mentor in the world of security.

I remember running into him at concerts in San Francisco when both he and I lived in the Bay Area.

I'm stunned.

As I was talking to Wandi, I thought, "I think my brother knew him too," and should have called. It's been really difficult to try to track down who all knew him, though. :(

It's okay - I haven't talked to him in years, so it wasn't like I was as close to him as you were. Finding out via lj was fine with me.

It's just a bit of a shock to think that he's gone, though.

Howard was so sweet. While we were never tremendously close with each other, he and I got to know each other in IRC. He was the first person I knew with a digital camera. I remember him taking pictures of me at a party and Laga and then sending them to me later. What a great person he was...

I'm just really saddend to hear this.

I don't think I met him, but he helped write GFS, so it's because of him that I have a job.
